Anyone interested in helping remove and replace a 7.3L in a '99 F350. The ultimate in diesel engines, I've blown up two in less than 10K miles, needs to come out. I have the replacement, necessary parts, tools, and a skyhook to lift from. No big hurry. Its been sitting on the driveway for weeks while I've been cooling off. The weather is getting nicer so I thought I might give it a try.
Thanks, Tim Barnwell, SC

Howdy Tim, that's a sweet ride you have pictured in your signature. Are there anymore pics of it on these forums anywhere? If not, I wish you would post some. Being a copycat and shamelessly stealing ideas from someone else's setup is the highest form of flattery. I've been contemplating going with a halfcab for my own 74 EB. I think it would be easier to switch to my soft-top or bikini top from a halfcab than from my fullcab. Would you agree? ![]()

The first was an injector failure. Half of the tip broke off. Mechanic blamed me for putting a chip on it. It had one in it when I got it but surely it wasn't that one that caused the failure. The second had a bad wrist pin/piston issue. Couldn't tell if it was just diesel rattle or a problem when they started it for me to hear it run. Just drove it til it came apart. #3 piston. About a $600 in parts and it will be good to go. Have to get it out of the truck first. Have the original back together after replacing the piston there. Head gaskets, bolts, oil pan, etc. Just need to swap the injectors, turbo, intake, alt, ps, ac, etc back onto the original. Nothing but unbolting and bolting it all back up.

Chip my hind-end! I've had a Hypertech chip in my 7.3 ever since the warranty went out on it. I don't do anything with it but pull my Park Model Camper up and down the highway. The camper empty weighs in at 14,500 lbs. and the 7.3 laughs at it as I go up hills, thanks in no small part to my chip set on tow . My opinion( for what that is worth) is you need a different mechanic, not a different engine. The 7.3 is the most bullet proof engine ever built!! My $.02 worth!!

If you believe the press, yes. My experience, not so much. I know failures happen. This just hasn't been my best buy to date. A 7.3 with only 119K on it should go for a long, long time. Not mine. Have it rebuilt and ready to go back in. Just scared to try pulling the other one out and screwing something up in the middle.

I love my 7.3.
I lost an HPOP a while back but that's the only issue I have had with it for 100K. I haul a 4000 lb Lance camper while pulling my wifes Heep ... runs like a pissed off bull. The only Barnwell I can find on Bing maps is by Lake Lure in WNC. Is that it? If so I can help you swap out the motors ... no problemo! Ahhh crap! Barnwell SC ... not NC! Damn!

SC. Back door of the world. I'll get a little more organized and set a date and see if anyone wants to come over and play.
Thanks, Tim
